Just a quick note to thank all of those who ventured out, some very long distances (Ed from Port St. Lucie!) to attend our annual holiday event at Gatsby's in Davie. We had a great time and enjoyed an excellent presentation from Dr. Jerry Gultz...Coach Bob Starkman and his daughter Alison arrived later and were so appreciative of the overflowing box of donations. Some of our members knew Bob and it was a great opportunity for them to catch up...We completed a great evening, those of us who were left (Morrie!) to watch the Orange beat the Spartans in a great game...Was great to see so many new faces...Best wishes to everyone and very happy holiday greetings!

Syracuse University Alumni Club Holiday Party
Syracuse University Networking Colleague:
We have a very special event set for 12/7 to be held at our usual meeting place: Gatsby's in Davie (1805 S. University Dr. Davie, FL 33324). This is not our typical networking meeting, however, it still presents an excellent opportunity for you to meet other members and their guests and we encourage you to bring plenty of business cards.
By now you have seen information sent via email, and in Squeezings (http://www.southfloridasyracuse.com) as well as on our Facebook page with details on the holiday party. We have partnered this year with Broward College to support their efforts to send much needed products/goods to the men and women of Army Airborne 187 in Afghanistan. This link will give you the full list of items that are in short supply and which these men and women have specifically requested from us: http://southfloridasyracuse.com/news/DonationlistSUALUM1207.pdf. Every member attending is asked to bring a donation with them to the holiday party. We will be greeted personally by Coach Starkman of Broward College who is a very dynamic speaker and has promised a tale or two about our own Jim Boeheim.
We will additionally have a guest speaker, a prominent forensic dental expert, Dr. Jerry Gultz, who will provide insight on his experiences at Ground Zero during the tragedy of 9/11. Somber yes, but it promises to be both educational and inspirational and a real highlight of our guest speaker series.
There will be the usual great food and drink specials that are made available to Syracuse Alumni and those that wish to stay later will gather around a private big screen TV to watch the Orange Hoopsters, currently the 9th ranked team in the country, take on highly rated Michigan State Spartans in the Jimmy V classic.
Those of you who haven't been to a networking meeting or any of our general membership events lately, this is one you don't want to miss. Come on out, wear your Orange, and lets have a great evening together. You'll be helping out a very worthy charity partner, you'll re-acquaint with some old friends, and you will make some new friends, and possibly even some business contacts. In distance, we are separated by many miles from "The Hill" but our alumni club is a great way to keep that connection alive, especially since we have such a diverse cross-section of class years and experiences. The first 5 members who RSVP to this event and who haven't been to any event all year long, will receive a complimentary Syracuse University Flash Drive, just see Dean at the event and remind him. I look forward to seeing you on 12/7 at Gatsby's, and hope that you will be part of our largest gathering of alumni members this year.

Lebron: Friendship above all else
Prior to the announcement that Lebron James signed with the Miami Heat I was sending this link to family and friends.
State of LeBron: Live at 9, from his ego - NBA - Yahoo! Sports http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-lebrondecision070710
The article described just how ridiculous the entire process had become and blamed James and the media for creating a circus atmosphere.
A second article appeared just after James signed with the Heat which postulated that "the decision" was made years ago.
Inside look at LeBron's free-agent coup - NBA - Yahoo! Sports http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-heatfreeagency071610
So much has been written and discussed and just about everyone has issues a statement concerning "the decision". What I have to add to the inventory of words is simply this:
It isn't about winning championships or sacrificing income or concern about legacy, or image, or brand or any of the issues mentioned, which will be the subject of business books, sports books and psychology books for years to come. In my opinion it is all about relationships. James made his decision as many of us make ours: based on his preference to be among his friends. That makes him no different than any of us. It dispels the notion that you don't do business with friends. In fact, I suggest that is the only business we should all do.
